FOR SALE: 1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ — Bonus Bavarian Rage Included
’99 XJ with the factory 4.0 deleted and replaced by THE BMW M57 diesel. Yes, that M57. It’s mechanically sorted, doesn’t leak like a normal XJ, and pulls like it’s trying to twist the chassis in half.
This isn’t modern-fast — it’s apocalypse-tractor fast. Tons of torque, climbs like it hates gravity, and gets shockingly decent fuel economy for something that sounds like an angry industrial machine.
Interior is peak old Jeep: no frills, windows are your AC, seats exist. If you want comfort features, keep scrolling.
I’ve got serious time and money into this, and the price reflects it. Don’t ask if it’s available. Don’t ask for my bottom dollar. Bring cash, bring a trailer, and bring mechanical competence.
Serious buyers only. No joyrides. Respect the machine.

On a serious note:

She's not perfect, there are usage marks/small scratches & dings. A paint correction would go a long way. I pour 90% of my focus into the mechanical side of things.

Headliner hangs a bit(typical XJ), but you can't see it from the drivers seat, nor has it gotten any worse in the 10k KM since the swap. No ABS, no AC, no Cruise.

Why am l selling? I like building things, driving them afterwards is just the cherry on top. This thing is ready to go. I easily have 250+ pics taken during the swap.

BTW in the parts list, '*' denotes 'used'. Otherwise, everything else was new

This motor, M57D30tü(306D2) 204hp Euro4, came out of my E46 330d that l bought & used as a daily driver from late 2017(at 282k Km) until l pulled the motor in May 2024(at 396k KM) to complete this swap. During this time, l only tanked with Shell V-Power & used Castrol Titan FST 5w30(every 10-12tKm, although l recently switched to Shell Helix H8 5w40 on the last oil change, 174,xxx on XJ Odometer). This vehicle was properly cared for in my ownership.

The swap was completed at 166,100 on the XJ chassis, the motor having 396k KM at this time.

No, there's has been no Überholung on this motor. The narrowblocks are solid: no timing chain issues as on the later versions. The steel exhaust manifold has been replaced with a cast iron version, egr/swirl flaps/ews/ VSS(vehicle speed sensor) have been programmed out/deleted.

The XJ retains it's original drivetrain(AW4, NP242, Dana35 rear). The AW4 is a tough transmission, capable of handling the M57's torque.
The M57 is coupled to the AW4 using PMC Motorsport's 20mm adapter plate & flexplate adapter kit. Wariat Garage motor mounts arms & alternator/power steering pump relocation brackets allow the m57 to sit in the engine bay without interference. The topmount turbo adapter & oil feed hose are also Wariat, necessary to clear the motor mounts(which had to be 'prefabricated' for TÜV Eintragung).

Speaking of TÜV: those of you simply asking for my TÜV Prüfer's info, l do not wish him to be flooded with calls from dreamers who are going to pick his brain/ ask how I did my swap. Hope you understand. We are all adults, do your research as l have done mine. As a native English speaker, l was able to figure it out & get it legal.

For those Service members going back home soon, this is over 25yrs old as you've noticed, so it's clear to hit US soil.

Shoot me a msg for pics, or better yet, go to the German site Kleinanzeigen(dot)de and search 'Cherokee M57' in Autos....lotsa a pics there, thx.
